When you think about which film melodies are probably unforgettable, Ennio Morricone's piercing harmonica motif from "Play Me That Song" immediately comes to mind. However, the legendary composer only received the Oscar of Honour for his life's work in 2007. Morricone did not see himself primarily as a film music composer; it was only one of his artistic facets. Influenced by other artists of his time such as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, Ennio Morricone created piano concertos, choral works and chamber music, among other things, far away from Hollywood. This large part of his oeuvre received little public attention, which Morricone repeatedly regretted in interviews. Only recently have lesser-known and unknown works from Ennio Morricone's personal archive in Rome been published.
Our tribute to Ennio Morricone combines his Oscar-winning film music for "The Hateful Eight" and legendary Sergio Leone westerns with rarely performed soundtracks for "Marco Polo" or "Novecento" and the concert piece "Ostinato Ricercare per un'Immagine". "Hamlet" and "I Figli Chiedono Perché" were transcribed especially for our concerts and will be performed in concert for the first time in Switzerland by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich with an expanded orchestra under the direction of Frank Strobel.
As many of the works performed were not created in connection with films, the concert - in keeping with Morricone's aesthetic - will take place without moving images and stills.
Programme curated by the European FilmPhilharmonic in cooperation with Musica e Oltre - The Ennio Morricone Official Legacy Company and the Ennio Morricone Estate
There will be a programme booklet with corresponding illustrations for sale for CHF 5.
