Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's second piano trio op. 49 had barely been published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1840 when Robert Schumann named it the "master trio of the present day" – perhaps also because of the unusual equality of the three instruments, which leads to a unique melodic line. The success of the work was so great that it had a significant influence on the piano trio genre even after Mendelssohn's death. Johannes Brahms, on the other hand, created long-lasting enthusiasm with another trio: his Horn Trio op. 40 (1865) is still regarded today as an important contribution to the genre. As he intended the natural horn (instead of the modern valve horn) for the trio, the horn part is not characterised by brilliant virtuosity, but rather by the sound colours created by the unusual combination of horn and violin. This matinee concert features works by Mendelssohn and Brahms, two trios that have had a lasting influence on their genre.
