The Belcea Quartet now combines completely contrasting works by the two: Schubert's op. 10 is a youthful work that he may once have written for home music use in his family. Shostakovich's op. 144, on the other hand, is his last string quartet; the composer, who was already seriously ill at the time, wrote an infinitely sad work with it, consisting of six adagios in E flat minor: a late, deeply moving experiment.
