Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich impressed Gramophone journalists. The selection criterion was the release of a «magnificent and often thought-provoking new album» that has emerged over the past twelve months. Editor-in-Chief James Jolly explains: «The chances to hear an orchestra live over the past 15 or so months have been greatly reduced. But thanks to recorded music we could still enjoy that unique experience of numerous musicians playing together. Among our ten ensembles are a couple of orchestras that have all evolved and grown thanks to the leadership of visionary conductors and administrations determined to be the best.»
James Jolly had a first-hand look at the collaboration between Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich last year. Our Music Director was on the cover of the November issue of Gramophone. Here you will find a five-page portrait of Paavo Järvi and a review of the recording of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony.
Until 13th September, Gramophone offers an extensive accompanying programme on its website, including podcasts and playlists on the nominated ensembles.
From 6th to 12th September, the focus is on your orchestra. Is the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich also your Orchestra of the Year? Please vote!
On 5th October, the result will be announced at the Gramophone Classical Music Awards 2021.
