Kullervo: Season opening with Paavo Järvi
Paavo Järvi has chosen «Kullervo» by Jean Sibelius for the inaugural concert as the new Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. It is a tragic Finnish saga, formed into a great symphony with choirs and vocal soloists.
Paavo Järvi on the work
For me «Kullervo» is a very suitable piece for this very special and festive concert, which is not only the beginning of a season, but also at the beginning of the first season of the orchestra and me as a team.
I also find «Kullervo» an interesting choice because it's off the beaten track. It's something you wouldn't expect, and that's exactly what I can imagine to be the red thread for our future seasons.
