Music education

Music is something great. We want to share this with our audience. Music touches, connects, offers unforgettable experiences and is infinitely diverse.

We make music for everyone. Interested people of all ages and backgrounds are invited to be inspired and discover classical and contemporary music: in talks or introductions to works, concerts by young musicians, on a guided tour behind the scenes, in workshops, in concerts for the little ones, for families or when classical music is combined with club sound. We also work with school classes and young people and promote direct contact with musicians and composers.

We play and tell stories not only in the concert hall, but also in various community centres in the city of Zurich.

Music education has a long tradition at the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. The first youth concerts were organised as early as 1928 by chief conductor Volkmar Andreae. And Gerd Albrecht, the chief conductor from 1975-1980, was also very keen to get children and young people interested in classical music. We have remained true to his commitment and have constantly expanded the programme and developed new formats over the last few decades.

"The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich's music education programmes are a central focus of the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich's overall offering. They offer access for all target groups, regardless of age, and deal with questions of audience acquisition and retention in an innovative way. They pursue a participatory approach and enable interaction between musicians and the audience. The formats often combine classical music with other contemporary art forms. In cooperation with various institutions, extraordinary programmes are created."
